next up on africa seven is the second edition of our -african funk experimentals- lps. with these we took some of our favourite african artists, choose the most funky we can find and then put together a compilation of their choicest and funkiest tracks. of course that may not be their most popular or best selling tracks..., but that s just fine. we are digging for the funk.

seems like somethings going on across the pond at the moment with seemingly blossoming, or at least rejuvenated scenes in the united states and canada. our last handful of releases on freerange have included artists from montreal, tujuana, pittsburgh and chicago and were about to add los angeles to the list with this new one from justin jay and ulf bonde. the young producers have been steadily building steam with a number of fine releases the last couple of years and we welcome them to freerange for their debut ep entitled indecision. the title track sets the mood with a low-slung, super-deep house groove complete with an intimate vocal and a charming simplicity which contributes to the powerful end result. elements come into focus then disappear in a fog of reverb whilst playful guitar picks add a live jammed feel to the loping groove giving things a bob moses/francis harris kind of vibe

oxia returns with a striking 5 track ep including 2 remixes by visionquest’s shaun reeves and 8bits own steffen deux! the bedrock of french quality techno has already created countless classics that proved themselves against the test of time and with unity ep, he’s bound to to it again. the up and down mixes of „unity“ take over with tight drums and rich bass carried by an airy vocal. oxia’s keen ear for detail adds the rest, making them perfect dance weapons for almost any setting. steffen contributes a deeper take on „unity“ working with subtle effects and evolving spheres to create that early morning vibe. „soulsa“ original and remix by shaun are completing the package with laid-back grooves and a fine tool for darker hours. this quality set couldn’t be more versatile, 2016 couldn’t continue any better!

some more homegrown beats from elvis cassetta on morris audio! after his huge tune humney (morris audio 94), mr. cassetta is ready with another fine ep called longstreet claps. the title track is a deep and upbuilding house tune with cool vocals and a sexy bassline and shows elvis more subtle side of house. more of that please! the remix courtesy of up and coming london/leeds duo jammhot (madtech, roots of bloom, morris audio) taking a more stripped down approach, but as sexy as the original version. the b-side offers two straight club cuts, elvis cassetta style! and yes, elvis is his real name! enjoy!

ltd warehouse found! played by raresh and steffi! vinyl only.. after collecting good feedback from rick wilhite, marcellus pittman and others to the “flying with you” ep, sai finally delivers a new 4 track release named “goes into space”. a fine techno record that will expose his music to wider audience. sai has been sculpting a distinctive sound through a number of quality releases and reaches now to maybe his most accomplished work. deep hypnotic and highly infectious this is a timeless piece of vinyl. * goes into space ep* is japans cutting edge answer to the global electronic music scene.

the third ep of the trilogy works following the releases d6&d7 from sundance in 2012 and flying one hand from op.disc in 2015 comes this one. a) side is the unreleased dub version of the previously released same titled track. b) side is the fine interweave of radiqs percussion + fumiyas base/beat groove with soul vocals. the sound is different from the style of dirtriix works and the each has its distinctive own groove.

roman poncet returns to figure with another batch of deadly efficient tools featuring four productions in his stripped-back signature style. opener vicious sets the stage with a snappy and muscular breakbeat holding the rhythm down tightly until creeping synths reveal the track’s true, eery intentions. marguerite is more welcoming, with gentle percussion and dubbed out chords making for a loop that could go on forever. the b-side is another example of skillfully sculpting sounds both lean and powerful. on atome i ricocheting synth echoes and fine layers of percussion sway back and forth until they collapse into an extended atmospheric breakdown. starting out reduced to its very nucleus, the second version slowly lets an electrifying tension fill the blank spaces. comprising a set of bare-bone grooves as slick as they are powerfully moving, roman poncet delivers another ep in true figure fashion that is sure to stay in the bag for a long time.

das ding, one of the legends of rotterdam, has been going since the early 80 s with his label tear apart tapes . he had releases on the finest of imprints such as minimal wave. now midlight will issue a some heat by the artist in subject with pride. these excerpts from das ding s modular techno setup were originally released on cassette by dehef, a most fine small imprint from rotterdam.

killer deep spaced out electro tracks!!! over 20 years ago shad t. scott and his pal seven set up isophlux records, miamis infamous first electronic imprint releasing, as they put techno, electro, funk, experimental, and anything good. now in year 2016, shad under his gosub alias releases this sunday at battle ship key titled ep for barba records, staying true to that initial principle. its far away from just being good though, its beautiful and warm electronic music at its best, oozing chill and feel good moods. original two tracks are accompanied with a remix by second time appearing on barba - jtc aka tadd mullinix who this time nicely surprised us with his ol school ny style house beauty. overall one fine classic record this, period.

local talk release number 66 moves in deeper territories with a duo that needs no further introduction, greg dowling, shane johnson aka fish go deep. these two fine gents have been releasing music for more than two decades. both greg & shane played an integral part in the emergence of house music in cork city between the years of 1988 and 2001 as their well renowned sweat night at sir henrys helped to attract a host of talent, such as kerri chandler, laurent garnier, dj deep, glenn underground, derrick may just to name a few. it s a big, big honour to have them on aboard for this debut on local talk. first track, off script, takes us straight back to the days of prescription. the driving kick and bassline, warm pads and a hypnotic melody line that crescendos throughout the track keeping you hooked from start to finish. on the flip, northern reach, follows on the same theme. it hits deep, the strings adds that extra bit of drama and again showing the duo s skill in creating perfect atmospheric and timeless deep house. you wouldn t be surprised to hear dixon drop this in a dj set.

brotherhood sagats and ludovic, together with steve murphy & dj octopus, are another duo coming from the venetian school of the now berlin based analogue cops. their sound reflects the typical approach where drum machines, synthesizers and samplers are recorded directly on tape without being digitalised. handmoon ep encloses five fine raw cuts, four pressed onto vinyl and a bonus track which is available though hardmoon london bandcamp only.

amin peck is an electronic studio project, contaminated by the new wave from u.k. like most ’80s electronic bands. amin-peck walked a fine line between disco and minimal wave throughout the course of the early 1980s, oftentimes incorporating shameless pop melodies and avant-garde leanings. amin peck were an italian band leaded by giorgio fioroni (aka george fyron, arrangements, production, vocals) with leonard parker (arrangments, keyboards) and max marne (production). incredible but true, amin peck started as hard rock guitar band in the 70s... and becoming one of the best examples of italo disco. this limited edition it contains full-length versions plus uncut audio material (a2) tracked down during tape restoration. (the first pressing coming from 1982 was pressed only on 7inch in u.k.)

the double drop label present the second of three parts from the invisible cities collective, made up of luca c & brigante plus guests. following the summers moments in between (featuring ivan smagghe remixes), in my garden finds the guys carving a sumptuous slo-mo house groove, with a rather special secret collaborator on vocal duties. the result is something lush and unique. the original is backed with a fine interpretation from the mole, and the super cool edge of our love completes the package. the new music from invisible cities doesnt stop there. next up is part 3, sunkissed with remixes from apiento and special dubs from mad professor.

the r zone series excels at raw, inventive, off kilter club music from a range of mysterious artists. that fine tradition continues once more here with another four cuts of inventive music that takes cues from techno, idm, acid and house. lumidei is all wonky drums and out of time hits and is a brilliantly weird cut full of spacious atmospherics. mynheer is built on a bed of broken beats, knocking hits and metallic textures that all tumble and fall around loosely and invitingly.

french label d3 elements returns to chicago for its next ep, this time looking to the assured house talents of hakim murphy for three tracks of raw, dense grooves right from the heart of the windy city. opener boxbeat is a curious, freaky jam with bobbing percussive hits, wonky, pixel thin synth lines and free roaming pads that wrap the whole thing in a nice sense of spaced-out serenity. taste o rainbow has a much more firmly planted kick drum that pounds away uninterrupted below a free flowing brew of modulate synth sounds. it s expertly reduced and masterfully reserved and is sure to send dance floors wild as a result. the flipside cut freshness has pinging drums and a big, frazzled bass line as slithering chords rain down the face. musical yet jacking, cosmic yet propulsive, it is a perfectly contemporary chicago house sound that rounds out a fine ep from one of the best in the game.

infuse drop their first 12- of 2016 which sees howl ensemble take the reigns for a fine 3 tracker. nexus is a bottom heavy warehouse groove with plexus providing able support with its deeper aquatic style whilst sexus rounds things off with an altogether trippier experience

the italian serves up 4 tracks of analogue proto-techno. the style can be defined as techno of an esoteric nature with elements from 90’s warehouse material mixed with vhs horror movie aesthetics. moans, groans, whips and desire can be felt throughout the record with a lustful theme running throughout. violet poison s trademark post-punk aesthetic and industrialism are in fine form for 007 with shades of rhythmic noise, experimental dark ambient and power electronics. full printed sleeves.

having previously used their dnuos ytivil offshoot to release material from their nearest and dearest (think batu, bruce, hodge and alex coulton), bristol’s livity sound crew turns to unknown french producer simo cell. the two tracks showcased here are a rather fine introduction to this newcomer, with opener “piste jaune” offering a clandestine blend of stuttering electro bass, discordant analogue percussion hits and spooky electronics. the mystery man goes for the jugular on “cellar door”, with pitched-down, bleep style melodies and liquid electronics riding an off-kilter, broken techno groove. another fine livity release.

repress . dungeon meat are back after 2 well received ep s from point g and mr g with some serious claw to the floor club weapons. welcoming another new addition to their brigade of beat butchers, it s the dutch producer and dj known as larry de kat who drops a fine feline selection for his purrr-versions ep. four killer tracks which showcase his diversity and perversity in the studio. theres no doubt that this selection will do the damage on the dance floor and bring even more attention to this undeniable talent.

the white noise backdrop of modern life means that without some fine-tuning on our part, even established and progressive artists can become elusive on occasion. but since musical creativity involves a healthy drive to self-determination, and often a keen collaborative spirit, out of earshot doesn’t necessarily mean out of action.
certainly not in the case of junior boys, who’ve readied a new album, big black coat, via city slang. a strikingly energised and intuitively dynamic set that reconnects them to their techno roots without sacrificing their soulful pop nous or riding a revivalist wave, it’s also shaped by what jeremy greenspan and matt didemus have been doing in the five years since their last release.

after the success of last years various artists backpack ep, french house label d3 elements is back with another fine four track affair that pulls together some key producers. detroit soulful house star terrence parker is back once again, and he is joined by d-knox, dan curtin and techelectro.

next on raw tools is irish producer and label owner, costelloe, delivering two tracks much in the manner of his previous works, both of them at the fine line between techno and house music.
while the title track, “infiniti” is definitely a dance floor track, with its rave pads and solid bassline, “pheta x” shows a more darker side of costelloe’s music. both of these cuts get special treatment from two of the most prolific and respected producers out there, lerosa and dj overdose, rounding off the ep with two amazing, yet diverse remixes.

constant sound founders jon woodall and burnski helm the label s latest 12inch under their constant name, with dub life featuring remixes from blackhall & bookless, s.a.m and a scott. dub life is a slithering, slippery and frictionless house roller with tunnelling percussive patterns, restless drums and myriad synth smears that really pull you down into a seductive groove. subtle vocals add character and ensure this one will keep floors locked for days. jaunt pair blackhall & bookless then step up with a fired up, peak time techno leaning bomb with barrelling kicks, ravey stabs and detroit referencing pads that really grab your attention. the s.a.m. reshape then offers up elastic, spaced out deep house vibes with airy hi hats, lots of height in the drums and plenty of feeling in the slithering synth lines that lace up the track. closing out the package is a remix from returning label artist a scott, whose fine remix is a lovably flabby and cavernous track with oodles of reverb, rattling train track like grooves and atmospheric pads that swirl all around you as you drift in his air beats.

syberian is a new pattern by sergey yakovlev. as his first project called gedevaan this another also focused and keep on the fine tune electronic music entering deeper to techno, house and experimental constructions among them. syberian is pitched hypnotic, cosmogonic shade of melancholy which sincerely looks on the world background. it has an authentic perception imprint and a set of sedate witness. the first release by syberian *an object by a human being* contains four basic tracks.

2016 is all set to kick off in fine style for the opilec music label as they release three brilliant remixes of an i-robots original. artwork comes from tamami saito to ensure this is another irresistible package. the original track here is opilec music boss i-robots come to harm which was released on his debut album laws of robotics back in 2007.
